Pay it forward

I’ve been struggling with lower back pain since last fall.  Constant discomfort in my lower back that keeps me restless and it’s a struggle to find a truly comfortable position sitting, standing, sometimes laying down.  I’ve been seeing a chiropractor since February to seek some sort of relief upon realizing it wasn’t going away on it’s own.  The chiropractor informed me my hips were out of alignment about a half inch and that would create great discomfort.  The only prescription for fixing it is to go through continuous realignment sessions to get them back to where they should be.

It’s been two months and very little difference has occurred on my end as far as comfort and pain goes.  This week I had taken up getting back into the practice of yoga.  I used to be an avid yogi but, like most things with adulthood it fell by the wayside as life got busier and busier.  Yesterday, as I was stretching about halfway through my yoga sequence, I felt what can only be described as what I imagine a gunshot to feel like to my lower back.

BOOM!  As soon as I felt that pain, I shot up wincing attempting to stretch it away.  But my attempts were to no avail.  The pain remained in my lower back, so crippling I couldn’t stand straight up to even walk.  I hurriedly made my way to the bathtub filled with Epsom salt in an effort to soak away the pain.  I soaked for about a half hour, praying when I stood the pain would have vanished.  No such luck.

I managed to find an oddly, somewhat comfortable position on the couch for a couple hours before making my way to bed where I awoke several times throughout the night in pain.

This morning, the pain is still there.  I can however manage to stand and walk without as much pain as last night, but sitting and standing and reaching are pain educing efforts.

To top off my bodily pain, this morning has been one-after-the-other series of unfortunate events:

-Awoke to realize my cell phone had not charged overnight, even though I’m 99% positive I plugged it in.

-As I opened the ironing board to press my dress this morning, the leg of the board slammed into my shin drawing blood and leaving a pump knot the size of a golf ball.  I kid you not.

-Wednesday, I had my car windshield (which had cracked on Sunday afternoon) replaced by a technician and upon inserting the new piece of glass, managed to ALSO crack…

-I almost walked out the door this morning without brushing my teeth because I had to take my husband to drop his car off to be serviced at 7am, so yes I literally got out of bed and followed him to the shop in my pajamas.

Which brings me to the goal of the day: PAY IT FORWARD.

I’m talking, holding doors open for people I encounter all day, putting quarters in expired parking meters, paying a strangers tab at a restaurant, bringing a co-worker coffee, smiling to everyone I see, repeating please and thank you, and whatever else I can do to reverse my streak of unfortunate events and attract some good karma.

Goals

You may be aware of a tradition popular at the beginning of each year where people set out to attain new goals—or resolutions, if you will—for themselves.  I’ve never been a big advocate of this tradition because I don’t believe in only setting goals for yourself one time a year.

However, after my new found discovery of sewing, I have set a new monthly goal for myself:  make (sew) something new each month.

I’ve been a long time follower of merricksart.com and refashionista.net but I never thought I could fashion some of their thrift store finds and hand-me-downs as well as they do.  But again, after trying my hand at sewing recently and discovering it’s not that hard, I’m going to put faith in myself and give them a go!

My only “rules” of attaining my goal each month are to (1) either sew something totally new (i.e. from pattern or free hand if I get really good), or (2)refashion an item into something new to me.  I already have a pile I’ve been saving of Carl’s old button-ups and such so I’m excited to try my hand at refashioning as well.  Still trying to decide on what my piece for February’s goal shall be.  Hmm…

Finding “Home”

There’s much to be said when one enjoys where they reside.  Since moving to Ohio nine months ago, I feel like a whole new person.  From the moment we unpacked & began settling into our new apartment on Super Bowl Sunday–where our first meal together was Chipotle–I felt a sense of comfort & belonging.  That feeling has only continued to grow since that very first day.Fall_Facebook_Final_3

Weekends are THE Best

You know those moments in your life that are so fulfilling & seriously warm your heart so much you think to yourself, I don’t deserve this much happiness?  This past weekend was definitely one of those moments.

It started off with my best friend driving 2 hours to come pick me up because my car had decided to stop working earlier in the week.  Why my BFF & not my parents who live in the same town as her?  My mom & I had planned a surprise birthday party for my dad on Saturday.  So yeah, that would throw a wrench in things.

I spent the evening with my BFF & her two kiddos.  Much fun was had.

The day of the party was a non-stop blur of finishing up decor, decorating the venue, making sure Dad was left out of the loop, & don’t even get me started on the balloon fiasco…

But we did it.  We had a great turn out of my parents’ friends, people that work with my dad, & family.  By the time my head hit the pillow late Saturday night I was O.U.T.

Happy Fall Y’all!

I have not been this excited for fall & the Halloween season since the last time I went trick-or-treating!  The temperatures have been mild with plentiful sun during the day & cool in the evenings.  Perfect for sipping warm apple cider while sitting on the patio (while I envision I’m sitting on a big front porch with a swing…swoon…).

Cheers to the weekend!

There’s just not enough time in one day anymore.  I know I’ve been told this & that time speeds up each year growing up, but man is it true!  This was abruptly brought to my attention this week when

a) I forced myself to start running again because my sister wants me to run a half marathon in October with her–I realized I hadn’t been running regularly since the NYC marathon almost 2 whole years ago!!!

and

b) Yesterday marked the beginning of fall semester at work AND it’s nearly September!!

Let’s catch up, shall we? Continue reading

Sweet Summertime

Where has the month of June gone?? I feel like it has flown by. Mostly due to my university hosting the annual new student orientation throughout this month. Basically, making everyday groundhog’s day with the repetition & turnaround of the masses of students I’ve been advising. Tomorrow marks the LAST day of summer orientation & the start of 3 blissful weeks off work.  What makes that time off even sweet is having NOTHING planned other than next weekend…

Rolling-stones-tour-logo-jpg

Next week alone consists of mine & Carl’s 2nd wedding anniversary & my birthday.  The icing on the cake:  Carl & I will be joining my family in Indianapolis to see THE ROLLING STONES!!!! ON THE FOURTH OF JULY!!!!!!  The Stones followed by pyrotechnics–does life GET any better than that??!?  (I am beyond excited if you can’t tell)

Other than that, my summer plans consist of attempting to get a tan & enjoy time with Carl & the fam.  We have another family concert planned toward the end of July to see THE EAGLES in Lexington.  My parents took my sister & I to see them back in 2003 & had such an awesome time together–memories we still talk about today.  Every time I hear their songs on the radio I think of that concert.  This year, we get to make a new memory with my little bro & Carl!

I’m hoping Carl & I get to make a beach trip (not sure where) at some point in August before the semester starts back & we are back at work full time.  I’m just excited I get a summer break again!  First time in 4 years, I hope to make the most of it!  Cheers to a happy summer!
